What is DOOH?

A Guide to Digital Outdoor Advertising

We see them every day—at train stations, in shopping malls, along the streets, and at major events. Digital screens that light up and display messages or information. But what does the acronym DOOH actually stand for, and why has it become one of the most powerful tools in modern marketing?

Simply put, DOOH stands for Digital Out of Home. It’s a collective term for digital outdoor advertising and signage in public spaces. But forget about boring, static images that just loop endlessly. Modern DOOH solutions are all about creating intelligent, dynamic experiences that adapt to the moment and truly engage the audience—like our case for Alcro, where we captured the color of the sky in real time and displayed the NCS code to people walking by. Below, we break down what DOOH is and how the technology works in practice.

A large, angled digital advertising screen above a brightly lit Lyko store in Stockholm displays a real-time countdown timer. The screen shows the numbers “25:11:22” and the text “EX60. A new beginning' against a warm-toned background, illustrating how the campaign transforms the urban space into a living stage.

1. From static paper to smart real-time data

In the past, posters were changed manually on physical billboards. It took time, was expensive, and the message remained fixed until the next change. The real magic of DOOH is that everything is controlled digitally and can be updated in a fraction of a second.

Because the screens are connected, their content can be controlled by external data. For example, the screens can be programmed to automatically change the message based on:

  • Weather and temperature: Show ads for ice cream when the sun is beating down, or for umbrellas when it’s pouring rain.

  • Time of day and demographics: Tailor your message depending on whether you’re targeting morning commuters, lunch-time diners, or weekend strollers.

  • Live Events: Update your screens in real time with live scores from an ongoing sporting event or the latest news feeds.

2. How does it work under the hood?

To create a DOOH experience that truly makes a difference, three elements must work together seamlessly:

  • The hardware: The displays themselves, media players, and any sensors designed to withstand the rigors of public environments 24/7.

  • The Software: The custom-built code and systems running in the background. The software acts as the display’s brain, ensuring it can communicate with other systems and process complex data.

  • Interactivity: The ability to connect the screen to its surroundings. This can involve physical buttons, motion-sensitive sensors, or smart integrations that allow visitors to interact with the screen using their own mobile phones.

A large vertical digital advertising screen in a busy station setting displays a powerful campaign from Plan International. The screen displays the message “11-year-old Dalia’s journey toward child marriage begins in 1 minute” alongside a full-width image of a girl in a white dress seen from behind, illustrating a large-scale DOOH installation with real-time data.

3. Why is DOOH so effective?

It has been scientifically proven that the human eye is drawn to movement. Traditional paper signs are easy to overlook, but a dynamic screen that reacts to its surroundings is hard to ignore.

However, the goal isn’t to create digital noise, but to deliver the right message to the right person at exactly the right moment. When technology is used intelligently, the advertisement or information isn’t perceived as intrusive; instead, it becomes a relevant and interesting part of the visitor’s daily life.

The future is interactive

The possibilities of DOOH are expanding as technology advances. By combining creative design with robust, secure code and smart IoT solutions, digital screens can be transformed from simple billboards into interactive experiences that people actually stop to engage with and remember.
